Charlie

Charlie is a 2 year old Chocolate Labrador Retriever. He presented to the clinic after having eaten a box of 5000 staples the night before. X rays were taken and revealed a mass of staples in Charlies stomach as well as several distributed through his small and large intestines. A small white mass was also noted in the intestines, though the exact object could not be identified.

Charlie went home for the night, to return the next morning for exploratory surgery and staple removal. Overnight he passed a lava rock in his feces, which after a second set of X rays, turned out to be the unidentified white mass on the x rays the night before.

Charlie was taken into surgery that morning. Majority of the staples had formed a large bean shaped mass that was removed directly from the stomach. A few remaining staples were then removed using a cow magnet. Charlie was kept overnight after the surgery and sent home the next day. He recovered well and did not appear to have any complications from the incident.

Three months later Charlie returned for his annual exam and vaccines and his owner reported that he had vommited a large piece of wood and a small lava rock. He appeared to be happy and healthy during the exam. A month later Charlie returned to us on an emergency basis. The owner suspected that Charlie had eaten a bag full of cash and coin, totalling $300 in american currancy. Xrays were taken of his abdomen. The stomach was clearly inflammed and there appeared there may have been something in the stomach. It was determined that it would be best for Charlie to be refered for endoscopy. An endoscope was used to try to retrieve the money from the stomach without having to take him into surgery. While there, the owners found the missing bag of money at home. It had fallen behind the bed where they had not noticed.

Sable

Sable is a 7 year old Female Spayed Rottweiler with a history of obesity. It was recommended that she loose at least 15 lbs. One or two pounds for a dog may be equivalent to 10-20 excess pounds for a person. Helping the pet to lose a few pounds will greatly improve their overall health.

We started Sable on the Medi-cal Slim Fit Program, a weight loss program designed specifically for pets. The program determines the most appropriate diet and feeding amounts and provides the owner with nutrition and exercise tips to best help their pet achieve an ideal weight.

Sable was put onto Medical Calorie Control with plenty of exercise to supplement her weight loss goals. Over a period of four months she went from 90 lbs to 66 lbs! She is now at her target weight and looks great!
